Choking Victim was a definitive ska / punk / hardcore band from New York's Lower East Side in the 1990s. They themselves defined their style as " Crackrocksteady ", an allusion to the Rocksteady who also influenced their music.
Band history
Choking Victim was founded around 1993 by Stza ( vocals , guitar ), Sascha Dubrul ( electric bass ) and John Dolan ( drums ). The name comes from a sign that hung on John's workplace.
After only three months and two concerts, John was replaced on drums by Skwert, with whom they recorded their first work, the EP Crack Rock Steady, a year later .
Shortly afterwards Sascha left the band and the band took up their next Maxi Squatters Paradise with the new bassist Alec Baillie .
Further appearances made the band known for their innovative music and political texts, but also because of their (as atheists ironic) satanic appearance and unsteady lifestyle (smoking crack , shoplifting and squatting ).
After a number of other changes in the band, they recorded their first album " No gods, no managers " in 1999 (with Ezra as 2nd guitarist and Shayne on bass) , only to break up on the first day of recording (but with enough material to get the record out). Stza and Ezra later formed Leftover Crack .
On November 11, 2000 the band (as cast from their album) reunited for a concert in Tompkins Square Park. In 2005 there were four appearances with the original line-up.
On June 11, 2006 there was another concert, again in Lower East Side's Tompkins Square Park, followed by a tour of the Dominican Republic .
