The Basmanny district ( Russian Басма́нный ) is a district of Moscow, in the north-east of the center . The district borders on the Kitai-Gorod in the west and the Jausa River in the south .
history
The synagogue is not far from the old Jewish quarter in Moscow, the Zariadye , but the construction of the synagogue was not allowed in the Kitai-Gorod. Therefore, the synagogue was built in the Bely Gorod ( Russian Белый город ) the white city . Construction began on May 28, 1887 according to plans by the Austrian architect Simon Eibuschitz , but was interrupted in 1888. During the Russian Revolution of 1905 , construction was allowed to continue and the synagogue was inaugurated in 1906.
In September 1948 Golda Meir (then still under the name Golda Meyerson) arrived in Moscow as the first Israeli ambassador to the USSR and visited the synagogue unannounced on Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur .
