location
The Chrüz is one of the slate foothills south of the Rätikon main ridge. As the foremost part of the Schafberg - Chüenihorn - Chrüz ridge, the Chrüz protrudes far into the valley. An even pyramid over the mountain villages of Pany, Stels and St. Antönien in central Prättigau is the Chrüz, often referred to as Rigi des Prättigau, an easily accessible vantage point from almost all sides on marked mountain paths. The compass direction and distance to Chrüz from the following places: Pany → 3 °, 3.02 km, Stels → 103 °, 4.724 km, St. Antönien → 240 °, 3.389 km.
Naming
His name has always been a mystery. It was assumed that it could be the topographical shape with the ridges strutting away from the summit, resembling a cross.
A legend is more accurate: Sometimes you could hear herd bells and yodelling on moonlit nights at Chrüz, although you knew that the cattle were in a different place. The next morning one always found stray or even fallen cows. An old man knew what to do: one should bury a cross on the Chrüz and bury it again when it appears on the surface in a hundred years. As long as the cross lies in the ground, the spell is broken with evil. Nevertheless there is a cross on the Chrüz today.
