Chris Letcher

Chris Letcher (* in the 20th century in Durban , South Africa ) is a South African singer-songwriter , film composer and university professor .

Life

Letcher lives and works in London and Johannesburg , South Africa, having worked in the music industry since 1998. In London he was at Trinity College of Music in Greenwich for Doctor of Music doctorate . He became internationally known through his albums Frieze from 2007, Harmonium (2010) and Spectroscope (2011). He gives concerts with his group in South Africa as well as in Europe and North America, for example at the South by Southwest festivals in Austin, Texas and its counterpart North by Northeast in Toronto , Canada .

Letcher wrote the orchestral music for the 6-part series The Runaway on the British private television broadcaster Sky One in 2011. In the same year he wrote the score for the BBC adaptation of DH Lawrence's novel Women in Love in a television series. In 2013 he composed the score for the BBC film Challenger: Final Flight with William Hurt in one of the leading roles.

South African directors he composed the music for such films as published in 2008 film My Black Little Heart by Claire Angelique or Elelwani in 2012. This in Tshivenda twisted film by director Ntshavheni Wa Luruli was in 2013 at the Berlin International Film Festival in the category Forum of New Cinema shown . In 2013 he wrote part of the music for the film Black South-Easter. Two more films followed in his homeland in 2014: Hard To Get by director Zee Ntuli and Cold Harbor by Carey McKenzie .

Letcher teaches composition of film music as well as theory and analysis of film music at the Witwatersrand University in Johannesburg.
