Chris Said

Chris Said (* 1970 in Nadur , Gozo ) is a Maltese lawyer and politician of the Nationalist Party (NP) who has been Minister for Justice, Dialogues and Families since 2012.

Life

After attending school, Said completed a law degree at the University of Malta and during this time was also president of the student council and for ten years president of the youth movement of the Nationalist Party ( Moviment Zgħazagħ Partit Nazzjonalista ) in Gozo. After completing his studies with a doctorate in law (LL.D.), he worked as a lawyer and notary and was also active as chairman of the Gozo Football Association for ten years.

His actual political career began in local politics when he was first elected member of the Nadur municipal council for the NP in 1993 . Most recently he was mayor of Nadur between 1999 and 2008 and during this time he was the first Maltese to receive the European Destination of Excellence Award (EDEN).

In the parliamentary elections in Malta on March 8, 2008 , Said was elected for the first time for the Nationalist Party for the eleventh legislative period as a member of the House of Representatives. Shortly thereafter, Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi appointed him Parliamentary State Secretary for public consultation and information in the Prime Minister's second cabinet . In this function, he pushed ahead with the reform of the local administration of Malta, re-established the Maltese EU Action Committee MEUSAC and also advocated increased dialogues in government work. Two years later, in 2010 Prime Minister Gonzi gave him additional responsibilities such as consumer affairs, competition and industrial relations. In this role, successfully introduced drug price reductions and presented the new draft law for the establishment of the Malta Competition and Consumer Affairs Authority .

Following the resignation of Carmelo Mifsud Bonniċi , Said was appointed Minister for Justice, Dialogue and the Family by Prime Minister Gonzi on January 6, 2012 .
