Christa Kirsten

Christa Kirsten (born October 7, 1928 in Breslau ) is a German archivist who earned lasting merit as director of the Central Archive of the German Academy of Sciences in Berlin.

Life

Christa Kirsten was born in Silesia and had to leave her home with her parents in 1945. Despite her youth, she initially worked as a new teacher in the Soviet occupation zone and thus actively participated in the development of a new school system. In 1946 she joined the SED . In 1948 she began studying history and German at the University of Leipzig . In 1953 she continued her studies at the Institute for Archival Studies, which she graduated in 1957.

In 1954 she did her doctorate under Hellmut Kretzschmar and Heinrich Sproemberg .

In 1957 she got a job as a scientific archivist at the archive of the German Academy of Sciences in Berlin . She later became head of labor and in 1961 director of this facility. In the same year she founded the working group of archivists of scientific institutions of the GDR, of which she became chairman.

In 1965 Christa Kirsten initiated the conference of representatives of the academy archives of socialist countries, which took place for the first time in Warsaw .
