Christen Lauritsen Aagaard (born January 27, 1616 in Viborg , ( Jutland ), † February 5, 1664 in Ribe ) was a Danish poet .

Life

The brothers Christians and Niels were sons of the preacher Laurids Jensen Aagaard († 1628) and Maren Andersdatter Schytte († after 1657), who worked in Viborg. Christen Aagaard studied in Copenhagen from 1635 to 1639 . In 1639 he became chaplain of Viborg Cathedral , in 1641 one of the directors of the Sorø Akademi and in 1647 associate professor of poetics at the University of Copenhagen. In 1651 he changed to the position of rector at Ribe. In 1658 he finally became lecturer of theology and preacher at Vester-Vedsted. On August 28, 1653, he married the pastor's daughter Mette Sørensdatter Vedel (* 1633; † 1698) in Ribe.

Of Aagaard's Latin poems, distinguished by their stylistic purity and elegance, Threni hyperborei (1648), a poem on the death of the Danish King Christian IV , deserves special mention. He also proved Christian's successor Friedrich III. a poetic homage. His literary estate was published in Frederik Rostgaard's Deliciae quorundam poetarum Danorum (1st volume, Leyden 1693, pp. 349-562) with a sketch of his vita added by his son (ibid., Pp. 341-347).
