Christ Resurrection Church (Zurich)
The Church of the Resurrection of Christ (Russian Церковь Воскресения Христова) is a church in the Oberstrass district of Zurich, belonging to the Korsun Eparchy, which belongs to the Russian Orthodox Church abroad .
history
The history of the Russian Orthodox Church in Switzerland began in 1816 when a house church was founded in the Russian embassy in Bern . The first church building ( Church of the Exaltation of the Cross ) was erected in Geneva from 1863 to 1866 . The municipality of Zurich was founded in 1936 and was for a long time in a two-room apartment at Kinkelstrasse 36 in Unterstrass . The community, which was originally formed by Russian emigrants, was also supplemented by Swiss over the years. In the late 1990s, when the number of parishioners had grown to 500, a church building became more and more urgent. The project of the church in the Russian architectural style was rejected by the Zurich authorities because of a discrepancy with the general style in the city.
In 2001, the Russian Orthodox community acquired the Emmaus Chapel at Narzissenstrasse 10 in Oberstrass, built in 1910, which had previously served as a meeting place for a local community of the St. Chrischona pilgrimage mission . The interior was redesigned for Orthodox services, decorated with mosaics by the hand of the artist Alexander Kornouchow and crowned with a turret with an onion-shaped dome. This turret is equipped with two bells that were delivered from Kamensk-Uralsky . On December 15, 2002 the church was consecrated by the Metropolitan of the Dioceses of Smolensk and Kaliningrad , Kyrill .
In addition to Russians and Swiss, the church is visited by Belarusians , Ukrainians , Serbs and Greeks . On public holidays, the number of visitors reaches around 1,000. The church has a Sunday school, a library and courses in Church Slavonic .
