History and architecture

The parish of Loznica started building the new Orthodox church on the former property of the Serbian language reformer Vuk Stefanović Karadžić in the Lagator settlement in June 2002 after the Loznica City Council had given the church 50 hectares of building land free of charge. Before construction began, the Archbishop of the Lavrentije Eparchy blessed the place where the church was to be built. The construction of the church was carried out by the construction company Zidar from Loznica . In 2003 the foundation of the church was consecrated by Archbishop Lavrentije. Five bells were installed on the church in 2006. In 2009 four gilded crosses were solemnly placed on the four domes of the church. The church has had some frescoes and icons since 2005 . However, most of the frescoes and the iconostasis still have to be painted or completed.

According to the head of the Eparchy Information Center, Deacon Miloš Petrović, the construction of the Church of the Ascension should be completed in May 2011 to 2013. At the time of the press release, 70 percent of the construction work had been completed. Even if the church is not finished, services, weddings and baptisms take place.

The church is built in the Byzantine style with four domes . Initially, the church should have a usable area of 600 m². After re-planning, it will have more than 1000 m² of usable space on two floors and is 41 meters high. The construction costs are over four million euros. The archpriest of the church is Milan Aleksić, who also directs the construction work.

A four-storey rectory with an area of 4000 m² is also being built. In addition to the apartment for the priest and his family, there will be a chapel, a library, a religious teaching office, a church shop, an internet café, a restaurant and an apartment for the episcopal.
