Life

Christian Andreas Naumann came from a family of tanners that had lived in Leipzig for several centuries and which can be traced back to the 15th century. In Leipzig he learned the trade as a tanner and was appointed master. Due to the economic upheaval, he and some of his brothers left Leipzig and settled in Wittenberg as citizens in 1788. He quickly found recognition in the city and was elected to the highest offices. In particular, as captain of the riflemen, he played an important role in defending the city during the Napoleonic Wars, also known as the Coalition Wars . Friedrich August I , Elector of Saxony, had declared himself an ally of France and a member of the Rhine Confederation in the Peace of Posen . The city of Wittenberg suffered badly from the war and the billeting . On May 1, 1806, Major Ferdinand von Schill appeared with his soldiers, who were known as Schillsche Jäger , at the gates of Wittenberg. Christian Andreas' brother, Johann Heinrich, was already watching the hussars move towards the city. Apparently they were targeting the Saxon army war chest located in the city. However, the riflemen and grenadiers closed the gates and occupied the walls together with the small garrison garrison. Due to the good and quick defense, the Schill Freikorps had to withdraw without having achieved anything. In 1828 Christian Andreas Naumann died due to suffering from dropsy of the breast .

Honors

In recognition of the defense of the city, on June 21, 1810, the two captains at the time, the rifle captain Christian Andreas Naumann and the grenadier captain JA Oeser (grandfather of the later Minister Rudolf Oeser ), were given two gold medals of merit from the King of Saxony - specially minted for this reason to hand over. On the front was the bust of the King of Saxony with the inscription "Fridericus Augustus DG Rex Sax. Dux Varsov" and on the back a seated female figure with the heading "Bene merentibus". The Wittenberger Schützengesellschaft, founded in 1412, was donated a flag by the king as a thank you.
