Christian B. Lang

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Christian (Bernd) Lang (born November 2, 1948 in Graz , Austria ) is an Austrian theoretical physicist , known for his contributions to the lattice theory . Since 1983 he has been a professor at the Institute for Theoretical Physics at the University of Graz , which he headed for many years and where he also founded a research group on elementary particle physics . He is (co-) author of around 240 research articles and two textbooks.

Life

After studying physics at the University of Graz , he received his PhD Summa cum Laude Sub auspiciis praesidentis rei publicae (1973). After positions at the University of Karlsruhe (today: Karlsruhe Institute of Technology ) and at CERN , he has been Professor of Theoretical Physics at the University of Graz since 1983. Numerous stays abroad took him to Germany, Switzerland, USA, Sweden and Ireland. He headed the Institute for Theoretical Physics at the University of Graz from 1988–1990, 1996–1999 and 2001–2004 and the research group "Quantum Field Theory on Grids" since 1983. He has been retired since 2014, but continues to work scientifically.

He is married to Eleonore Lang and has two sons (Alexander, Thomas).

research

His research area is elementary particle physics . The focus until 1980 was S-matrix theory and phenomenology of mesons. Since his stay at CERN 1980–1982 and inspired by a collaboration with Claudio Rebbi and Peter Hasenfratz, his main focus has been the lattice formulation of quantum chromodynamics . On this topic he wrote (with co-authors) over 200 publications and in 2010 the monograph "Quantum Chromodynamics on the Lattice" together with Christof Gattringer. Christian Lang was Specialist Field Editor of the journal "Computer Physics Communications" from 1991–2015, member of the Scientific Council at DESY from 1994–1996, member of the Board of Trustees of the Fund for the Promotion of Scientific Research in Austria from 2005–2007 and member of Scientific Steering from 2012–2016 Committee of Partnership for Advanced computing in Europe .

Teaching

Christian Lang supervised numerous diploma students and 15 doctoral students. Together with Norbert Pucker, he wrote the textbook "Mathematical Methods in Physics", the third edition of which was published in 2016.
