Christian Cabrol

Christian Cabrol (born September 16, 1925 in Chézy-sur-Marne , † June 16, 2017 in Paris ) was a French doctor , author and politician of the Rassemblement pour la République (RPR) and later the Union pour un mouvement populaire (UMP) . He was best known for performing the first heart transplant in Europe in 1968 .

Life

Christian Cabrol came from a farming family. He started studying medicine through his grandfather, who was a doctor.

After completing his studies, Cabrol went through a career in the Parisian hospitals. Gaston Cordier and, during a stay abroad in Minneapolis in 1956 , Clarence Walton Lillehei , were responsible for his development towards cardiopulmonary surgery . During her stay in the USA, I also made contact with Norman Shumway and Christiaan Barnard .

On April 27, 1968, Cabrol, with the assistance of Gérard Guiraudon, transplanted the first heart in Europe at the Hôpital de la Pietié-Salpêtrière . The 66-year-old patient Clovis Roblain died 53 hours after the operation.

From 1972 Cabrol headed the newly created department for cardiac surgery at the Hôpital de la Pietié-Salpêtrière. In this role, Cabrol carried out the first heart-lung transplant in France in 1982 and inserted the first artificial heart in 1986 . From 1989 Cabrol was President of France Transplant .

From 1989 to 2001 Cabrol was a member of the Paris City and General Council, first for the RPR and then for the resulting UMP. From 1995 he was assistant to the then mayor of Paris, Jean Tiberi .

From 1994 to 1999 Cabrol was a member of the European Parliament . There he was a member of the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety .

He was a member of the Académie nationale de Médecine .

Cabrol was married to the French actress Bérengère Dautun for the second time .
