Zoller received his doctorate in 1977, became a specialist in 1978 and qualified as a professor in 1991.

After completing the physics course, Zoller began to draw and paint intensively again. 1971 began a long-term joint artistic collaboration with Hanns Schimansky . From 1972 he worked in the drawing circle of the University of Rostock with Johannes Müller . In the next few years, Zoller obtained important suggestions from Johannes Müller (1935–2012), which later became a lasting friendship: In addition to the artistic exchange, also reflections on Zoller's teaching in the subject of morphology and anatomy .

Since 1973 he has completed corrections and discussions with Gerhard Kettner at the Dresden University of Fine Arts . From 1980 to 1983 Zoller was a master student at Kettner and in 1979 became a member of the GDR's Association of Fine Artists and Freelance Painters. Through an exhibition in the Galerie Mitte Berlin with Hanns Schimansky, he met colleagues from Berlin and Dresden. This was the beginning of friendships with Manfred Böttcher and Joachim Böttcher , Dieter Goltzsche , Berndt Wilde, Rainer Zille and Stefan Plenkers, among others .

In 1985 he began teaching at the Dresden University of Fine Arts as head of the department for artist anatomy. In 1989 he moved his studio to Parkstrasse 31 in Berlin-Pankow . "In the years when Manfred Zoller painted and drew as an autodidact in Rostock, he worked as an artist on a foundation that - despite all changes - has proven to be stable and sustainable up to the present day." (Johannes Müller, in: Katrin Arrieta: Manfred Zoller - Painting-Sculpture-Objects, MCM ART Verlag 2010) In particular, his feeling for color promoted his artistic development. His pictures - formerly representationally visible in cityscapes, still lifes and portraits - since the late 1980s in free, more abstract pictorial compositions - are committed to classic modernism.

Starting from collages , he began to realize spatial works as objects and sculptures with different materials in the early 80s.

These studies of his own were of benefit to him later in his teaching. At the art college, Zoller repeatedly referred to the stimulating, holistic contexts of the medical studies he completed. The independence of the students through their own acquired education and developed feelings were important to him.
