Christian Friedrich Herold
Christian Friedrich Herold (* 1700 in Berlin ; † August 24, 1779 in Meißen ) was a German porcelain painter.
life and work
He probably learned enamel painting from the gunsmith Fromery in Berlin . Herold was employed as a painter and gilder in the Meißen porcelain factory from 1726 and was one of the few trained skilled workers at the factory under the direction of his namesake JG Höroldt . He transferred the enamelling technique to the porcelain, in particular he succeeded in combining gold plating with the glaze.
Herold mainly painted port landscapes and Kauffahrteiszenen with excellent figure staffage in a calm plot. But moving battle motifs and subtle flower arrangements are also part of his repertoire. Numerous signed pieces have been preserved, and further works can be ascribed to him, as he used identical motifs on copper plates signed by him, which he enamelled as a housework after work.
