Christian Friedrich Stölzel (* 1751 in Dresden ; † November 23, 1816 there ) was a German engraver and portrait artist .

Live and act

Stölzel learned drawing from Johann Eleazar Schenau and the art of etching and engraving from Giuseppe Canale (1725–1802, since 1751 active as professor of copperplate engraving at the academy). Between 1765 and 1771 he was a student at the Dresden Academy , of which he became a member in 1779. He trained several students there. From 1779 he worked as a copper engraving teacher and court copper engraver and from 1791 onwards he made book illustrations, especially after Schenau and Johann David Schubert . An illustration can be found in Christian Gotthilf Salzmann's book Der Himmel auf Erden , the second edition of which was published in 1798.

His son and student Christian Ernst Stölzel became a painter, etcher and engraver. He had at least one other son and daughter whom he also taught.
