Christian Hamm

Christian Wilhelm Hamm (born July 19, 1953 in Hamburg ) is a German cardiologist and university professor at the Justus Liebig University in Giessen . He is director of the Medical Clinic I, Cardiology / Angiology of the University Clinic Gießen - Marburg and Medical Director and Managing Director of the Cardiology Department at the Kerckhoff Clinic in Bad Nauheim.

Life

Hamm studied medicine and German at the University of Mainz (1973–1976) and the University of Hamburg (1976–1979). He received his doctorate in medicine in Hamburg in 1979 on blood flow and metabolism of the myocardium in patients with aortic stenosis . This was followed by a research and training grant from the German Research Foundation (DFG) at the Heart Research Unit of the University of Cape Town , South Africa and a position as senior physician in the department of cardiology at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf . Hamm completed his specialist training in internal medicine in 1988 and completed his habilitation in internal medicine in 1989 on the subject of examinations of the pathogenesis, clinic and therapy of unstable angina pectoris .

Hamm was appointed adjunct professor for internal medicine at the University of Hamburg in 1995, and a year later he was appointed to a C3 university professorship for a limited period at the cardiology department of the University Hospital Eppendorf. Hamm has been director of the cardiology department at the Kerckhoff Clinic in Bad Nauheim since 1999 and has also been medical director and managing director since 2004. In 2008 he received a W3 professorship for cardiology at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main . In 2013, Hamm was appointed to the chair of cardiology / angiology at the Justus Liebig University in Giessen and was appointed director of the Medical Clinic I at the Giessen University Hospital.

Since 2012 he has been managing director of the Kerckhoff Heart Research Institute with the Justus Liebig University Gießen (KHFI), and since 2017 Medical Director of the Kerckhoff Heart and Vascular Center in Bad Nauheim.

Christian Hamm is a son of the physician Hans Hamm .

Scientific contribution

Hamm's scientific and clinical focuses include cardiac biomarkers , interventional therapy, acute coronary syndrome as well as magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography of the heart. In 1992 he described risk markers in acute coronary syndrome.

Hamm contributes to various national and European guidelines, including "Non-ST Elevation Acute Coronary Syndrome", Coronary Revascularization and "Valvular Heart Disease". He also wrote the guideline "Diagnostic Cardiac Catheterization".

Memberships in scientific associations

Hamm is a member of numerous scientific associations. These include the German Society for Cardiology - Heart and Circulatory Research (DGK) (President 2013–15) and the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) (Board member 2004–2008). He is also a member of the American Heart Association (AHA) and a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology (FACC). Since 2010 he has been a member of the German Society for Thoracic, Cardiac and Vascular Surgery (DGTHG) and was its conference president in 2012.
