Christian Herbst

Christian Herbst (* 1879 in Öttingen ; † 1966 ) was a German civil servant and member of the SPD .

Life and work

After completing his studies and doctorate, Herbst joined the Bavarian forest administration. In 1902 he was a candidate for forestry and in 1905 he passed the second state forestry examination. Afterwards he was an unskilled worker in the government forest department in Regensburg . From 1907, Herbst was paid alderman and from 1909 mayor of Osterode in East Prussia .

From June 1920 he was acting representative, authorized representative and confidant of the High President of East Prussia at the Reich and State Ministry. In December 1920 he was appointed senior councilor. From 1921 he was senior councilor at the senior praesidium of East Prussia, as well as vice president. Between 1928 and 1932 he served as regional president in Lüneburg . In the course of the dismissal of the Prussian state government Braun-Severing ( Preussenschlag ), he was made available as a member of the SPD in autumn 1932 by the Franz von Papen government .

In 1945 he rejoined the SPD. In April 1946 he was appointed police chief of Zehlendorf-Süd . From October 1945 to August 1946 he was head of the General Directorate for Waterways and Shipping in the Soviet Zone of Occupation . After his release he moved to West Berlin.
