Christian Ludwig Brandt (born November 3, 1800 in Cracau ; † May 9, 1868 in Magdeburg ) was a German local historian .

Life

Brandt was born in Cracau as the son of the farmer Johann Andreas Brandt and his wife Margarethe Sophie, née Reppin. In the village school, his teacher Johann Conrad Böse and the pastor of the village Johann Tobias Heidmann became aware of him and encouraged his further education. So he came to the Domgymnasium in Magdeburg , which at that time was connected to a teachers' seminar, which was also headed by the rector Johann Andreas Matthias. After attaining the Prima, he continued to attend the seminar and completed his teacher training there. In 1819 he began his pedagogical career at the Domgymnasium Magdeburg and in 1825 he was employed as an assistant teacher. He taught Latin until 1838 and was then responsible for teaching writing at the grammar school until his death. At the same time he was appointed custodian at the cathedral church in Magdeburg . With the permanent job at the Domgymnasium he was able to start a family and married Charlotte Titzer. They had seven children. The eldest son Gustav Adolf followed in his footsteps and became rector of Magdeburg.

Services

The beginning of his term of office, the time after the wars of liberation, was shaped by the awakening German national consciousness and a broad interest among the bourgeoisie in researching their own history. It was here that his love for medieval art and architecture was aroused. The great repairs to the domes from 1826 to 1834 inevitably brought him into personal contact with many of the art-savvy contributors and shaped his image and understanding of Magdeburg Cathedral. Brandt was one of the co-founders of the “ Association for History and Antiquity of the Duchy and Archbishopric Magdeburg ” and became the closest collaborator of the association's journal. He published some articles on the architecture of the cathedral in the “ Geschichtsbl Blätter für Stadt und Land Magdeburg ”. For his work he was honored as a knight of the Red Eagle Order 4th class . On the occasion of the celebration of the 500-year inauguration of the cathedral in 1863, his main work on the cathedral was published, “The Cathedral of Magdeburg. Historical, architectural and monumental description of the cathedral. ”By E. Baensch in Magdeburg.
