Mårtenstorget , at the beginning also Oxtorget ( Ox Square ), is a square in the southern Swedish city of Lund . It is located in the medieval city center, not far from the cathedral , in the Centrala staden district .

history

At the beginning of the 19th century, the Stortorget square , which served as a market square, became too small and a new square was planned to replace the St. Peters Kyrkogård cemetery (today Petriplatsen east of the city library). As a result, the paint manufacturer Jöns Petter Borg bought an open space that belonged to an old courtyard and offered it to the city as a donation if the city built a new marketplace there.

At the beginning there were a few craft and residential houses around the square. Around 1850 houses with classicist facades that no longer exist today were built on the east side of the square . With the opening of the railway line from Malmö to Lund ( Södra stambanan ), economic interests focused on the areas of Klostergatan and Lilla Fiskaregatan , not far from Lund train station . Few new buildings were erected in the area around Mårtenstorget. Therefore, well-preserved houses with mansard roofs and backyards have been preserved , especially on the south side of the square . Two of these houses date from 1781 and 1818.

At the beginning of the 20th century, building began to be reinforced. In 1909 all buildings were completed, including the new market hall (Saluhallen) on the west side of the square, into which the meat dealers from Stortoget moved. Mårtenstorget has served as a market place since then and as a parking lot since the second half of the 20th century. Today is Monday through Saturday market held.

Clockwise around the square are the Krognoshuset House, the Lund Art Gallery , a branch of the Systembolaget , shops for daily needs, residential buildings and the market hall.
