Christian Oberländer

Christian Oberländer (* 1966 ) is a German Japanologist .

Life

He studied medicine, Japanese studies and public administration at the Universities of Bonn , Tokyo and Harvard . From 1988 to 1989 he had a DAAD scholarship to study at Keiō University . In 1992 he was licensed to practice medicine. From 1992 to 1994 he had a PhD scholarship from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology at the University of Tokyo . After receiving his doctorate in 1994 as Dr. phil. (Major in Japanese Studies) he was a research assistant at the German Institute for Japanese Studies from 1995 to 1998 . From 1998 to 2000 he had a habilitation grant from the German Research Foundation . After completing his Master of Public Administration in 2000 at Harvard University and his habilitation in 2001 in Japanese Studies at the University of Bonn , he had a Humboldt / JSPS scholarship at the University of Tokyo from 2001 to 2002. Since 2002 he has been Professor of Japanese Studies at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg . From 2006 to 2007 he taught as a visiting professor at the University of Tokyo.

His main research interests are Japan's contemporary society and culture, often with a focus on policy analysis, Japanese history, with a focus on 19th and 20th centuries, and Japan's international relations, among others. a. also on German-Japanese relations since 1945.
