Christian Patermann

Christian Patermann (* 1942 in Gleiwitz , Upper Silesia ) is a German lawyer. He is considered one of the pioneers of the bioeconomy in Europe; from 1996 to 2007 he was program director for biotechnology , agriculture and food in the European Community in Brussels and from 2009 to 2012 a founding member of Germany's first bioeconomy council .

Live and act

Christian Patermann graduated from high school in Braunschweig in 1962. After studying at the universities of Freiburg im Breisgau, Lausanne, Geneva, Munich and Bonn, he passed the legal exams and received his doctorate in 1969 at the University of Bonn with the topic: “Development the principle of free assessment of evidence in ordinary German civil proceedings in legislation and teaching ”.

After successfully passing the state examination in law, he worked from 1971 to 1996 at the Federal Ministry of Science, where he was engaged in research in space travel, environmental issues and global change. From 1988 to 1993 he was press spokesman and head of the management team of the then Federal Research Minister Heinz Riesenhuber .

From 1996 until his retirement in 2007, Patermann was responsible for the environment and sustainability in the Research Directorate of the European Union and, as program director for “Biotechnology, Agriculture and Food”, shaped the EU's agricultural research framework programs in particular.

Engagements and honors (selection)

Since his retirement, Patermann has been a consultant for numerous private and public institutions and was a founding member of the first German bioeconomy council in 2009. In 2011, the Faculty of Agriculture at the University of Bonn awarded him an honorary doctorate in agricultural sciences for his services to agricultural research . In 2012 the Accademia dei Georgofili appointed Patermann a member of the world's oldest agricultural academy. In 2018 Patermann was made an honorary member of the International Society for Horticultural Science.
