Christian Poncelet (born March 24, 1928 in Blaise , Ardennes department , † September 11, 2020 in Remiremont , Vosges department ) was President of the French Senate from 1998 to 2008 . The UMP politician previously had a long political career at the regional level and was State Secretary under Pierre Messmer from 1972 to 1974 , under Jacques Chirac from 1974 to 1976 and under Raymond Barre in 1976/1977 .

life and career

Born in Blaise in 1928, Poncelet attended the French Post Office's national school and began working there in 1950. At the same time he made his first experience as a union secretary in the Christian CFTC

In 1962 he moved to the Remiremont municipal council for the UNR-UDT , where he stayed until 1973. From 1972 to 1977 he worked in various positions as State Secretary in conservative governments. From 1963 to 2015 he was the representative of the canton of Remiremont in the General Council of the Départements Vosges , from 1976 to 2015 President of the General Council. In 1977 he entered the Lorraine Regional Council as well as the French Senate. From 1979 to 1980 he was a member of the European Parliament , from 1983 to 2001 Mayor of Remiremont.
