Christian Schmidt (brewer)

Christian Schmidt (* 1832 in Machstadt, Kingdom of Württemberg ; † 1895 in Philadelphia ) was a German brewer and president of the brewery known as the Christian Schmidt Brewing Company .

biography

Schmidt learned the brewing trade in Stuttgart , emigrated to the USA in 1850 and settled in Philadelphia in the state of Pennsylvania in 1851 , where he worked in various breweries. In 1859 he took a job in the Robert Coutrennay's brewery and two years later became its business partner.

In 1863 he took over the brewery and renamed it Christian Schmidt, Kensington Brewery . Between the 1880s and 1890s, the annual output of this brewery increased tenfold. Schmidt then introduced his sons Henry C., Edward A. and Frederick W. into the company, which was then renamed C. Schmidt & Sons .

Schmidt died in 1895 and his son Edward took over the management of the brewery. The Schmidt brewery continued to grow in the following decades, survived prohibition and expanded nationwide. In 1987 it was sold to the G. Heileman Brewing Company and closed; the brewery complex was demolished in 2002.
