Christian single

Christian Single (born May 24, 1816 in Stuttgart ; † September 1, 1869 there ) was a German winemaker, viticulture specialist and founding director of the Weinsberg viticulture school .

life and work

Single was born into an old family of vintners in Stuttgart in 1816. He grew up in this city too.

In 1843, Single was a co-founder of the Urbania Weingärtner Choral Society in Stuttgart and in 1848 co-founder of the Stuttgart property association. From 1854 he was the first chairman of the latter association, where he was also responsible for the experimental vineyard. From 1851 to 1869 Single was a councilor in Stuttgart. He was also a member of the agricultural district association and committee member for the Society for Wine Improvement in Württemberg .

In 1852 Single carried out viticultural information trips on the Rhine and Moselle. He then worked as a hiking instructor for the wine-growing districts in Württemberg. He made further specialist trips to southwestern Switzerland and the Lake Geneva area (1857), to Tyrol and Austria (1859), to the Rhine and Lake Constance (1860, 1862) and to Erfurt (1863).

In 1862 he was appointed an expert and advisory board member for viticulture at the Royal Central Office for Agriculture in Württemberg . In April 1866, Single became the founding director of the Königlich-Württembergischen Weinbauschule in Weinsberg . First of all, he carried out preparatory construction work before the Württemberg wine-growing school opened its doors for teaching and research in February 1868 .

In 1860 Single had published the work "Illustrations of the most excellent and main grape varieties in Württemberg". Overall, Single has made great contributions to the care and enhancement of viticulture and grapevine breeding in Württemberg.
