Christian Strenger

Christian Strenger (born May 29, 1943 in Baden-Baden ) is a German economist specializing in corporate governance and asset management .

Career

Christian Strenger studied economics at the University of Cologne from 1965 to 1969 after completing his bank training at Merck Finck & Co in Munich (1962–1964) and graduated with a degree in business administration. 1970–1971 trainee positions in corporate finance and asset management at Brown Brothers Harriman & Co. (private bank) in New York and at SG Warburg (merchant bank) in London .

In 1972 Strenger joined Deutsche Bank in Frankfurt and was responsible for investment banking activities in Northern Europe and Great Britain . In 1982 he moved to the London branch as General Manager with responsibility for corporate finance and asset management. From 1986 to June 1991 Christian Strenger was Chief Executive Officer for Investment Banking and Asset Management in North America in New York. In his time u. a. the issuance of The Germany Funds listed on the NYSE and the establishment of a "Recognized Dealer in US Treasuries". In 1991 he became spokesman for the management of the fund subsidiary DWS Investment (today: Deutsche Asset Management Investment GmbH) in Frankfurt. Under his leadership, the fund volume managed by the largest German and European leading public fund company for more than three million investors grew to over 150 billion euros. In 1999 Strenger moved to the supervisory board, to which he still belongs.

Corporate governance commitment

Christian Strenger has also established and maintained good governance through his work in asset management. a. by creating codes and focusing on the exercise of shareholders' rights. In addition to his work in specialist committees, Strenger works through direct discussions with the management board and the supervisory board, contributions to general meetings and interviews to encourage companies to pursue good corporate governance and control.

Mandates / memberships

From 2001 to the end of February 2016, Strenger was a founding member of the government commission “ German Corporate Governance Code ”. At the international level, Strenger is a member of several governance networks and advisory bodies. These include the International Corporate Governance Network (ICGN) and the Global Governance Knowledge Group of the International Finance Corporation (IFC) / World Bank . His current supervisory board mandates include Deutsche Asset Management Investment GmbH (Frankfurt) and The Germany Funds (New York). He held previous supervisory board mandates a. a. at Evonik Industries AG, Fraport AG, Metro AG and TUI AG.

Academic engagement

Strenger held and holds lectures at the Universities of Delaware / USA, HHL Leipzig, Maastricht, Münster and Witten-Herdecke. Since 2011, Strenger has headed the Center for Corporate Governance at the HHL - Leipzig Graduate School of Management together with two co-directors. He holds lectures in the HHL MBA program. Also because of this commitment, the Senate of HHL appointed Christian Strenger as honorary professor for corporate governance in September 2014 . He has written numerous articles in scientific journals and specialist journals.

Honors and honors

In 2003 Christian Strenger received the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon from the mayor of Frankfurt, Petra Roth (CDU) . In 2014 he received the Lifetime Achiever Award from the ICGN, of which he was Chairman in 2005/2006.

Cultural engagement

Christian Strenger is committed to art and music and supports the Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt (chairman of the Verein der Freunde), the Städel in Frankfurt (member of the board of trustees), the Kronberg Academy, the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra Vienna (as sponsoring board) and the Mozarteum Foundation Salzburg (member of the advisory board).
