Christian Wilhelm Heinrich Posselt (born September 14, 1806 in Weinheim ; † January 21, 1877 in Heidelberg ) was a German physician who was the first to succeed in isolating nicotine from the tobacco plant.

His father, Carl Ludwig Posselt (1782–1845), bought a pharmacy in Heidelberg on August 20, 1795 and bought the Schwanen pharmacy in 1807, which he kept for 31 years. He was also a member of the Baden state parliament in Heidelberg. He married Susanna Karolina Anderst.

He studied medicine in Heidelberg and Würzburg. When Dr. med. In 1828, Christian Wilhelm Posselt isolated nicotine from tobacco in a competition with Karl Ludwig Reimann . They described the effective nicotine in a prize publication "De Nicotiniana - About the tobacco plant" submitted to the University of Heidelberg on the isolation and physiological properties of nicotine. For their investigations, they received a gold medal from the Grand Duke of Baden, the gold state medal of the Grand Duchy of Baden. Nicotianin is reminiscent of Jean Nicot , who introduced the tobacco plant (Nicotiana) to France in 1560. The work was later completely forgotten, the manuscript was not found again until 1938, a year before the First International Tobacco Congress, under waste paper in a Berlin attic.

The precursors to this work are mentioned: Gaspari Cerioli (1781–1865) found the oil essenziale of tobacco in 1807 , Louis-Nicolas Vauquelin had extracted the essence de tobacco from tobacco in 1809 . In 1821 Sigismund Friedrich Hermbstädt published remarks on nicotianine, a peculiar component of the various types of tobacco . Furthermore the cigar manufacturer Otto Unverdorben , Mathieu Orfila , Leopold Gmelin , the Heidelberg pathology professor Jakob Friedrich Christian Sebastian (1771-1840) and Philipp Lorenz Geiger .

Christian Wilhelm Posselt became an associate professor at the Medical Faculty in Heidelberg in 1844.

His brother, Louis Posselt (1817–1880), became a private lecturer in pharmacy in Heidelberg, emigrated to northern Mexico as a mine expert after the failed Baden Revolution in 1849, became a chemistry professor in his hometown on his return in 1860, founded the Posseltslust lookout tower at Kohlhof , and took part in the Karlsruhe Congress .

From Wilhelm Heinrich Posselt's marriage to Anna Babette (Barbara) Landfried (1812–1867) from Heidelberg, five children were born.
