life and work

Otto Unverdorben grew up as the son of wealthy merchants. He completed his school education in Dresden , then studied chemistry in Halle (Saale) , Leipzig and Berlin. His specialty was the dry distillation of organic matter. 1826 - at the age of twenty years - he was able for the first time, the very important for the paint and plastics industry raw material aniline produce by natural indigo a lime - distillation underwent. The indigo dye decomposed during distillation. Otto Unverdorben called the product Crystallin. The term aniline ( anil = Portuguese for indigo ) was not coined by Otto Unverdorben, but in 1840 by the German chemist Carl Fritzsche, who worked in St. Petersburg, after distilling indigo with potassium hydroxide. Otto Unverdorben was a pioneer for a new branch of industry. Some well-known chemical companies still bear his discovery in their name ( BASF = Badische Anilin- und Sodafabrik , Agfa = Aktiengesellschaft für Anilinfabrikation ).

In 1829 Otto Unverdorben inherited his parents' general store in his hometown of Dahme and from then on was no longer involved in chemical research. His contribution to the economy of the city of Dahme was the introduction of the cigar industry, which provided a large part of the population with an income for over 100 years. Otto Unverdorben himself was, however, a non-smoker.

In 1833 he acquired the Glienig manor (approx. 12 km from Dahme) and also became the patron of the village school there.
