Christian von Maltzahn

Gerd-Christian (Gerardo Cristian Federico) von Maltzahn (born January 28, 1956 in Buenos Aires ; † April 3, 1997 in Kremmen near Berlin) belonged to the founding generation of the gay movement in the late 1970s .

Life

His parents were Bernd Freiherr von Maltzahn (Vanselow) and Waltraut (née von Hagen). In 1960 the family moved from Argentina to Cuxhaven in Germany. From 1976 Maltzahn lived in Berlin. There he studied law and was a gay activist in the Homosexual Action Westberlin (HAW), where he participated in the action We are gay. 682 men came out to participate.

In November 1978 he founded Germany's first gay bookstore, the Prinz Eisenherz Buchhandlung , together with Peter Hedenström, Michael Keim and Lothar Lang , and together with Annick Yaiche the company “Buchimport Y&M”.

In 1981 he founded the Bruno Gmünder Verlag together with his partner Bruno Gmünder , in 1982 together with Theo Düppe, Michael Föster and Bruno Gmünder the gay monthly magazine TORSO and in 1983 together with Annick Yaiche the Romanische Buchhandlung in Berlin.

Since 1984 he has worked as a literary translator from English and French.

Von Maltzahn died in 1997 at the age of 41 from complications from his AIDS illness.
