The Christian Police Association (CPV e. V.) is a German non-denominational, non-profit professional association in which active and retired employees of the police forces of the Federal and the countries from the two big popular churches and numerous other Christian denominations have joined forces. The seat of the association and the federal office of the association founded in 1984 is in Winterlingen ( Baden-Württemberg ).

Mission and goal

In accordance with its statutes, the CPV contributes to imparting Christian values in everyday police work and to shaping professional ethics . This also includes social help, regardless of the religious convictions of the person in need. Contacts between police officers and their relatives should also be promoted. It offers practical life and orientation aids in various situations, often in conjunction with and with the support of Protestant and Catholic police pastoral care .

Memberships

The association is a member of the International Christian Police Fellowship , the international umbrella organization of national Christian police organizations. In German-speaking countries, she works closely with the Christian Police Association Switzerland and Christian Police Association Austria . She feels connected to the German Evangelical Alliance .

history

Through the Christian Catherine Gurney (1848–1930), who took care of the pastoral care of police officers, the movement of Christian Police Associations emerged in England at the end of the 19th century. This later developed into an international association. In Berlin Gurney got to know the German hymn poet Hedwig von Redern , as a result of which a Christian police association was founded in Germany in 1904 under the name “Bund Christian Police Officials” (BCPB). With the permission of the Berlin police chief, 7,000 “policemen” are invited. 80 police officers accepted the invitation and 5 groups were formed in different parts of Berlin. In 1909 the magazine “Allzeitready” was introduced as a monthly association publication and offered at an annual subscription price of 1 Reichsmark. The first edition is distributed in an edition of 2,400 copies. In 1913, 24 cities with CPV groups were listed as “ready at all times”.

activities

National

The association is organized in national and regional groups that offer local events (impulse evenings, themed evenings, etc.). She has connections with over 4,000 police officers. A circle of friends includes around 1,500 people from politics, business, churches and culture. In October 2017, the Christian Police Association had almost 500 members. Honorary Commissioner of the CPV is u. a. the television journalist and bestselling author Peter Hahne . At the 30th annual reception of the Christian Police Association (CPV eV) in Nuremberg, Bavaria's Minister of the Interior, Joachim Herrmann , emphasized the great importance of the professional association under the motto "Value creation through appreciation". "The Christian Police Association offers practical life and orientation aids in a wide variety of ways and thus actively supports our police officers in all areas of life," emphasized Herrmann. “Your great commitment to the benefit of our police force deserves the highest recognition.” More than 600 representatives from politics, administration, business and churches took part in the 30th annual reception.

International

International contacts are an important part of the association's work. The association supports an international police team in holding seminars and training courses for police officers in countries where democratic values have been among the achievements of recent years. Among other things, this involves the further development of ethical principles for leadership in the police and technical support in the fight against corruption . She enjoys the recognition of German interior ministers : “As CPV you can look back with pride on the past years and the associated commitment to Christian values. This also includes the cross-border aspect - the international seminars held by the CPV on ethical and moral values in police leadership and the anti-corruption seminar that is held on different continents. Contacts with police pastors and pastors have also proven to be valuable. "

From September 14th to 17th, 2017, the trinational Lake Constance Conference with the Christian Police Association Switzerland and Christian Police Association Austria took place in Bregenz on the topic of "UNSecurity" . At the public event, among others, criminal psychologist and forensic psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Reinhard Haller, high-ranking police officers and police chaplain Dr. Marilyn Neubauer. Internal conflicts and fears in everyday police life were highlighted, conflicts when service instructions or operations are difficult to reconcile with one's own beliefs and values, or fear at violent demonstrations such as the G20 in Hamburg.

Publications

In 2017, the 5th edition of the revised so-called “Police Bible” was presented to the public after 45,000 copies had already been printed in the previous editions and received consistently positive reviews in police literature. “The New Testament for Police Members published by the Christian Police Association is a success story. This is already evident from the great demand that has now led to the fifth edition. It shows that this utterly extraordinary book still has a lot to say to us today ”, writes Federal Minister of the Interior Dr. Thomas de Maizière in the foreword of the book mentioned. In addition to easily understandable texts from the New Testament and the Psalms, the Police Bible contains moving experiences and reports from police officers from the federal and state levels. It also contains information for notifications of death and a "condensed presentation of biblical and ethical values". The book is rounded off by an overview of the tasks of police pastoral care. For the 5th edition, the accompanying texts have been completely revised and the important topic of post-traumatic stress reactions has been added. The association wants to offer important help for physically and / or psychologically stressful assignments. This includes the identification of stress and causes, prevention, the motivation to lead a healthy life and, ultimately, therapeutic and pastoral support.

In 2018 the book "Hautnah - Mit Gott bei der Polizei" was published. The police profession places high demands on physical and mental performance as well as emotional resilience. In this book, police officers from Germany, Austria and Switzerland report on stressful missions and how the Christian faith gives them strength and courage. In one article, for example, a police officer writes how he was asked about his belief by colleagues after the Winnenden rampage. “They let the readers look into their hearts, so to speak,” writes the publisher. "It is not the spectacular stories that make it stand out, but the many little experiences in which the Christian officials individually experienced preservation; the stories of how they endure stressful missions and deal with suffering; how they answer the question of after a rampage Colleagues answer what she wears, "wrote one reviewer. This book of the Christian Police Association Germany was published in cooperation with the CPV Austria and the CPV Switzerland and, due to the demand, has already been published in the 2nd edition.

Because of the positive response, according to the publisher, another book with reports from Christian police officers with the title "Hautnah 2 - Mit Gott bei der Polizei" was published in 2020.

Since 2019, the CPV Germany and the Christian Police Association Austria, in cooperation with the Christian publishing company Dillenburg, have been publishing the annual wall calendar “With God at the Police”, which is available in bookshops. According to the association's publication, the calendar is intended to help interested citizens “to take a position: we stand behind our police!” It contains photos from everyday police work with Bible verses.
