The Christian Gymnasium Jena (short: CGJ ) is a state-recognized substitute school in Jena , sponsored by the Evangelical Church in Central Germany .

history

In the early 1990s, several parents came together to found an alternative Christian school in Jena. After negotiations with the city of Jena, an old building in the city center in Grietgasse was made available. In 1994 the first grade moved in. In the following years, the entire building and the neighboring building in the back yard were also used. In the summer of 1999, the school moved out of the old, now much too small, building complex to move into a renovated and converted barracks on the former Russian army base in Jena-Nord . In 2002 the school was recognized as a substitute school by the state of Thuringia . Thus, the first year of Abitur with a valid Abitur could leave school.

particularities

The school offers denominational, cooperative religious instruction from the 5th to the 9th grade . This is carried out in phases with all students in a class, in phases in confessional groups. Students who are not denominational must assign themselves to one of the groups (Catholic / Protestant). Ethics is not offered at the school. From the upper level (in Thuringia from grade 10), religious instruction is only offered separately for each denomination. This model is unique in the Diocese of Erfurt and in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Thuringia.

All permanent teachers must belong to a Christian denomination.

The Christian Gymnasium Jena has the distinction of being a smoke-free school. This means that smoking is not allowed on the entire school premises - this also applies to teachers, parents and guests.

Global learning is on the schedule from the 5th to the 8th grade .

In order to offer a larger range of advanced courses, there was initially a cooperation with the Carl-Zeiss-Gymnasium Jena . Schoolchildren there were able to attend the advanced course in history at the Christian Gymnasium , while pupils from this school at the Carl-Zeiss-Gymnasium could attend the advanced courses in physics and computer science .

In 2007, the school's first physics advanced course was held due to numerous student requests. This was also chosen by several students in 2008.

On March 19, 2018, the first issue of the new school newspaper "Kulturschock" appeared.
