The wayside shrine in Münsterschwarzach

The so-called Christoffelbildstock in Münsterschwarzach is located on the edge of the bridge over the Schwarzach . Like the other wayside shrine in the village, this one stands on Schweinfurter Straße.

history

The wayside shrine was erected next to the bridge in 1607. The founder was the host Christoph Mahr of the Gasthof Zum Benediktiner in Münsterschwarzach. An inscription on the reverse of the torture proves this. It reads: “God and Mary of the virgins, in honor I was built when it is counted in the seventh year, from the landlord in front of the Closter Christoffel Mahr, Regina was his honest housewife. anno 1607. “The Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation classifies the wayside shrine under the number D-6-75-165-31 as an architectural monument.

description

The shrine is similar to the Mount of Olives shrine in Volkach -Fahr, which was built in 1626 and also has four sides. On the front of the older Münsterschwarzacher stick, a crucifixion group with an angel's head is depicted. Two medallions on the shaft contain a laurel wreath and a Caesar's head. On the back there is a skull below the inscription .

The side faces bear the names of Christoffel and Regina of the donor couple. They are embodied by the respective saints. Saint Christopher in the costume of the 17th century with a doublet carries the baby Jesus, who is holding on to his hair, on his shoulders through a river.
