The bridge in Münsterschwarzach

The Schwarzachbrücke Münsterschwarzach connects the Münsterschwarzach monastery area with the settlement that emerged in the 20th century and the neighboring Gerlachshausen in the Lower Franconian district of Kitzingen . The listed road bridge leads over the Schwarzach and is spanned today by Schweinfurter Straße (Kreisstraße KT 11).

history

The history of the bridge is closely related to the history of traffic in the Schwarzacher Basin . The current bridge was built in 1680. In the monastery chronicle of Burkard Bausch , the monk reported in great detail about the construction of the bridge, which probably already had a medieval predecessor. Then the bridge connected the two mills Rhönmühle (also Haunmühle) and Pfletschenmühle (also Memmelmühle) belonging to the monastery .

The bridge was dilapidated before 1680. However, several Dutch businessmen in the Steigerwald wanted to bring carved wooden beams for loading to Gerlachshausen and crossed the bridge with their cargo, which was now in danger of collapsing. The Dutch had previously given the Münsterschwarzach abbot Plazidus I. Büchs the promise to rebuild the bridge. The bridge, which was originally made of wood, was torn down and replaced by the stone bridge that still exists today.

In addition to the businessmen, Abbot Plazidus also took part in the construction and had a stone carver in Wiesentheid erect six stone blocks with six stone spheres to stabilize the bridge for 22 guilders , which still exist today. At that time the bridge was completely within the district of Gerlachshausen and Bausch emphasized in his chronicle that actually the residents of the neighboring town of Münsterschwarzach should have borne the costs for the construction.

In the early modern period, a wooden protective wall arched the Schwarzach Bridge. In addition, several small monuments were erected on the railing of the bridge. The protective wall was torn down in 1921, and a year later the bridge was given a new iron railing. In the course of this renovation, the Christoffel shrine was also moved to the edge of the bridge. In 1988 the bridge was extensively renovated. It had previously been discussed whether to replace the structure with a reinforced concrete structure . A citizens' initiative stopped this plan.

description

The bridge itself consists of four bays. It was built with three arches and ends at the edge with mighty sandstone blocks . There are also two small monuments on the edge of the bridge. Both were placed on the west side of the structure. On the one hand, there is the so-called Christoffelbildstock from 1607, which reminds of the landlord Christoph Mahr. On the other hand, there is a larger than life representation of the Immaculata , which was created in the 18th century and decorated with a Latin inscription. → see also: Christoffelbildstock
