The Schwarzacher valley widening (also Schwarzacher basin ) is a small-scale natural spatial unit (5th order) with the order number 133.06 in the area of the Lower Franconian communities of Dettelbach , Schwarzach am Main and Sommerach in the district of Kitzingen .

location

The Schwarzacher valley widening (133.06) forms a sub-unit within the nameless main unit 133.0. It is part of the Middle Main Valley (133) and thus a natural area in the main unit group of the Mainfränkische Platten . The valley widening includes a section of the Main and its eastern hinterland. To the north is the Volkacher Mainschleife (133.07), which is also on the Main. In the northeast is the Dimbacher drift sand area (137.02), which is already part of the Steigerwald foreland . This also includes the Albertshofener drift sand area (137.01) in the southeast. The Kitzinger Main Valley (133.05) is another section of the Main Valley in the west of the Schwarzacher valley widening. The river area in the northern Maindreieck (134.10) fills the west.

The natural area is located in the northwest of the Lower Franconian district of Kitzingen. It includes areas in the communities of Dettelbach, Schwarzach am Main and Sommerach. The center is formed by the districts of the community of Schwarzach am Main (the local school was also called "Primary School Schwarzacher Becken"). In the north, the subunit ends on the outskirts of Sommerach. It stretches towards the south along the Main , where the Main Canal joins the river near Gerlachshausen . In the east, the natural area stretches along the lower reaches of the Schwarzach , Castellbach and Silberbach streams . The lakes of Hörblach form the southern boundary . In the southwest, the widening of the valley stretches back along the Main to the Dettelbacher district Mainsondheim , to the west, on the other side of the Main, the Schwarzenau district forms the boundary.

Landscape characteristics

The so-called Schwarzacher basin is a basin-like widening of the main valley. This widening was created by the confluence of three brooks into the Main (Schwarzach, Castellbach, Silberbach). They push flat alluvial fans in front of them, which cause an extremely flat rise on the banks of the Main. In the west, the area is extended by a mid-Quaternary valley meander of the Main. The basin is limited in the east by the rise in relief towards the Steigerwald foreland in the so-called Michelheidewald and the Lower Forest near Reupelsdorf . To the south, the monastery forest of Kitzingen forms the border to the extensive drifting sand areas along the Main.

The potential, natural vegetation (without human intervention) would create riparian forests of ash and elm . In addition, spruce trees would occasionally be found along the smaller streams. Today, however, the Schwarzacher valley widening is densely populated and interspersed with arable land.

Protected areas

In contrast to the adjacent natural areas, the Schwarzach Basin has only a few areas with protection status. These are bird sanctuaries along the Main and fauna-flora habitats in the forests of the adjacent natural areas. The Schwarzach and Castellbach streams are also registered as biotopes . To the north stands the conservation area Volkacher Mainschleife in the basin, northeast the landscape conservation area in the state forest Reupelsdorf be found.

climate

A special feature of the Schwarzacher valley widening is the local climate , which stands out from the surrounding areas. There is a high risk of spring frost here, which is favored by the lack of fog and the supply of cold air along the Schwarzach. This is why the region is not suitable for the fruit growing that is so widespread in the Middle Main Valley . In addition, the low amount of precipitation is a problem for agriculture; the valley widening is one of the driest areas along the Main.
