Christoph Borkowsky Akbar

Christoph Borkowsky Akbar (* 1948 ) is a German world musician , ethnomusicologist and music publisher. He was co-founder of the World Music Expo (WOMEX) and initiator of the Berlin festival Heimatklänge .

Christoph Borkowsky studied ethnology . In 1974 he gained at the Free University of Berlin with the work to some aspects of the Ovambolebens the Master Accounts.

While doing research for his dissertation in Namibia , he got to know the way of life and the music of the population, which inspired him to continue studying the emerging world music. In 1979 he organized his first festival, a benefit concert for Afghanistan refugees. In 1987 he founded the publishing house and the label Piranha Musik , which was the first artist to sign the Zimbabwean Mbira player Stella Chiweshe . Today the label operates worldwide with the publication of African, Oriental, Jewish and Latin American music.

Christoph Borkowsky directed the summer festival Heimatklänge in Berlin from 1988 to 2001 . In 1994 he was one of the co-founders of WOMEX, of which he was director from 1999 to 2006. From 2004 to 2007 he was the jury chairman of the Carnival of Cultures .

He is a board member of the Society for Traditional Music Berlin , a member of the board of the German music export office GermanSounds , a member of the board of the Berlin Music Commission and a member of the label board of the Berlin label commission . He is a member of the advisory board at the Musicology Department of the Humboldt University in Berlin .

Christoph Borkowsky Akbar lives in Berlin. He got his nickname Akbar (= "the great") through marriage.
