Christoph Spieker

Christoph Spieker (born February 28, 1956 in Münster ) is a German historian and has been the director of the historical site Villa ten Hompel in Münster since 2003 .

Life

Spieker passed the Abitur at the Alexander-Hegius-Gymnasium Ahaus in 1975. He completed his studies in history , art history and philosophy in 1982 with the first state examination for teaching at secondary levels I and II at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster. In November 2013 he received his doctorate with a study on traditional work. A biographical study on the character, responsibility and impact of the police officer Bernhard Heinrich Lankenau 1891–1983, already after a long career as a Dr. phil. After his training as a teacher and an additional qualification as an archivist, he worked as a historian archivist for the city of Greven from 1986. In 1999 he moved to the city of Münster as a research assistant at the historical site of Villa ten Hompel. In 2003 he took over the management of the memorial from founding director Alfons Kenkmann.

His research interests are in various areas of the Westphalian and Dutch history of the 20th century. In 1979 he began regional research on the regional history of National Socialism in Westphalia; on behalf of the city of Greven was involved in research and documentation of the project "Greven 1918 - 1950" from 1986. From 1989 Spieker carried out basic archival work as city archivist as well as further contemporary historical research and in particular the communication of regional history topics by means of exhibitions, publications, archival educational initiatives for school groups and classes from elementary school to upper secondary school in cooperation with all types of schools; Spieker conceived and moderated the "Greven Archive Talks" and published the "Greven History Papers" until 1999. At the historical site of Villa ten Hompel in the city of Münster, he was involved in basic research on recent police history and designed the concept for the first permanent exhibition “In order. Police, Administration and Responsibility ”(2001). Under his direction, the expansion of the permanent exhibition “reparation as an order” (2005) and the multimedia research station in the historical site were designed. The permanent exhibition “History - Violence - Conscience” opened in 2015. Christoph Spieker is currently concerned with the history of the culture of remembrance in Westphalia. Since April 2018 he has also been a member of the Historical Commission for Westphalia .

He is married and lives with five children in Greven, Westphalia.
