Christoph Wilhelm Busolt (born February 6, 1771 in Buchholz near Landsberg (East Prussia) ; † 1831 in Königsberg i. Pr. ) Was a German educator and champion of democratic educational ideals.

Life

Busolt attended the old town high school (Königsberg) . As a pastor's son, he also studied Protestant theology at the Albertus University in Königsberg ; but he did not become a clergyman because he was committed to educating his fellow men. Following the example of Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi , he wanted to build a community school in Königsberg in 1795; he found no support from the city administration. From 1795 he taught at the old town high school. In 1798 was awarded a Dr. phil. PhD. In the same year he married Luise Gramatzki , the daughter of a wealthy businessman (Gramatzki-Stift). He gave up teaching and went to schools all over Germany. Returned to Königsberg in 1800, he was appointed to the Commission for Churches and Schools. When Napoleon Bonaparte had occupied Prussia, Busolt was elected to Königsberg's new city parliament in 1809. It had 102 members. In the same year he was appointed to the commission for the reform of the Königsberg schools led by Wilhelm von Humboldt . During the French era , he was heavily involved in the Prussian reforms from 1807 to 1810 .

When Theodor Gottlieb von Hippel the Elder died, Busolt bought his park and country house on the Hufen (Königsberg) . In honor of his wife, he named the property Luisenwahl . In the summer of 1808 and 1809 he presented it to the royal family of Friedrich Wilhelm III. and Queen Luise available. The street (and a square) on the northern edge of Luisenwahl bore Busolt's name until 1945. Busolt later moved into a house on Paradeplatz (Königsberg) . There he took on August Neidhardt von Gneisenau for a few months. Busolt was only 50 years old.
