Christophe Dettinger (born May 3, 1981 ) is a former French boxer . He came back into the spotlight in early January 2019 due to a dispute with the police in connection with the yellow vests movement .

Life

Christophe Dettinger was born into a Yenish family, a group of historic travelers of European origin. He is fonctionnaire territorial , that is to say the area officer for roads and cleanliness in Arpajon in the Essonne department in northern France. He is the father of three children.

Boxing career

As an amateur, Dettinger was French heavyweight champion in 2003 and 2004, after he had won a bronze medal in the light heavyweight division at the European Junior Championships in Croatia in 1999.

At the 2003 Box-Am tournament in Spain he won the silver medal after losing to Kubrat Pulew in the final with 13:16 and at the Karl Lehmann 2003 tournament in Estonia also silver after losing to Andreas Gustavsson in the final

On October 22, 2004 he made his professional debut and won by knockout in the first round against the Slovak Peter Furman. After six more wins, he secured the French cruiserweight championship title on October 30, 2007 by winning points against Kamel Amrane. He defended the title against Merick Roberge in March 2008, but lost the rematch in May 2008.

After he remained undefeated in eight subsequent fights, he boxed again for the French championship in December 2011, but lost to Faisal Arrami. In September 2012, he lost to Ismail Abdoul in the fight for the WBC Mediterranean title . He played his last fight on December 6, 2013 for the French championship, losing to former European champion Jean Marc Monrose.

Yellow vests movement

On January 5, 2019, he was involved in a dispute with the police in Paris in connection with the yellow vests movement. In a video with over 1,000,000 views you can see how he is almost alone pushing back a group of police officers with shields and helmets. This quickly made him a hero of the yellow vests movement. On January 7th, he turned himself in to the police.

Within one day, Dettinger's sympathizers collected donations for him amounting to around 118,000 euros on an Internet platform to pay for the legal fees and a possible fine. However, the operator of the platform deleted the donation page after just under a day.

Although Dettinger's attorneys asked to be released because he was willing to cooperate with the judiciary, he was arrested and the Paris criminal court ruled him on February 13th. Dettinger faces up to seven years in prison.
