Christopher Mallaby

Christopher Mallaby (born July 7, 1936 ) is a former British diplomat.

Life

He attended Eton College , King's College , Cambridge, and Harvard Business School . In 1959 he joined the UK diplomatic service, where he worked until 1996. From 1961 to 1963 he worked in the Soviet Union at the British Embassy in Moscow . From 1969 to 1971 he also worked in the Foreign Office in the field of British-Soviet relations. From 1971 to 1974 he was Deputy Director of the British Trade Development Office in New York . In 1974 he went back to the embassy in Moscow until he was head of the arms control department, the department for Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union and the planning staff of the Foreign Ministry from 1977 to 1981. From 1982 to 1985 he worked at the British Embassy in the Federal Republic of Germany in Bonn . Between 1985 and 1988 he served as assistant secretary to Margaret Thatcher's cabinet . In March 1988 he became the British ambassador to Germany. He held this office until December 1992. In January 1993 he went to Paris as British Ambassador to France until July 1996 .

Mallaby then worked for 10 years as Managing Director in investment banking at UBS , where he mainly dealt with mergers and acquisitions. He was director of the Charter Pan European Investment Trust, member of the board of directors at Vodafone and held various functions in non-profit universities

Mallaby lives in London as well as in the south of France. He is married and has four children. In addition to English, he also speaks German , French and Russian .
