Leonard Mudie
Leonard Mudie Cheetham (born April 11, 1883 in Cheetham Hill , Manchester , England , † April 14, 1965 in Hollywood , California , USA ) was a British actor .
life and career
Leonard Mudie began his acting career in 1908 at the Gaiety Theater in Manchester. He was a member of Annie Horniman's theater company for several years and starred in classic plays by William Shakespeare , Francis Beaumont and Richard Brinsley Sheridan . In 1914 he moved to the United States, where he worked on a total of 25 productions on Broadway between 1914 and 1931. Even after starting his film career, he occasionally returned to the stage.
Between 1921 and his death, Leonard Mudie played in a total of over 130 films and around 20 television series, although he was always limited to supporting roles. One of his early roles was the archaeologist Professor Pearson in the horror classic The Mummy alongside Boris Karloff . The gaunt-looking character actor often played authority figures such as judges, doctors, politicians, priests or officers. More often, he also played in historical adventure and period films, so he was Pothinus in Cecil B. DeMille's strip Cleopatra to see and supplies to be dark and unjust interpreted Judge George Jeffreys , a war of words with Errol Flynn in Captain Blood . His later appearances include Charlie Chaplin's doctor in the classic film Rampenlicht (1952) and the murdered club secretary in the film noir Rattennest (1955). From the 1950s onwards, Mudie was also a regular guest actor on US television. He had one of his last roles shortly before his death in The Cage , the pilot episode of Starship Enterprise .
Leonard Mudie was married twice, including the actress Beatrice Terry (1890-1970), and had one child. He died of heart disease three days after his 82nd birthday.
