Life

Christopher Vogler works for the renowned film department at the University of Southern California (USC) in the area of story development and author support. He is the head of the fabric development department of 20th Century Fox , Fox 2000. At the time of Vogler's appointment in 1975, the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) mainly taught Aristotle 's poetics , some Greek and Roman drama and Shakespeare. For Vogler it was important to use a larger theoretical framework that also includes the dimensions of the emotional and spiritual. In his book “The Writer's Journey” (Odyssey of the Scriptwriter, 1998) he describes the universality of narrative structures. He draws this mainly from the studies of myth researcher Joseph Campbell “A hero with a thousand faces” and the theory of archetypes by the Swiss psychologist Carl Gustav Jung . Vogler describes the “ hero's journey ” as a kind of “monomyth” on which all stories are based. This involves running through various tests, challenges and problems that the hero passes during his story and which Vogler understands as the course of the individual soul through life.
