The Church of Christ the King (Polish Kościół Chrystusa Króla ) is a Roman Catholic parish church in Świnoujście (Swinoujscie) on the Baltic Sea island of Usedom in Poland . It was built from 1788 to 1792, rebuilt in 1881 and was a Protestant Christ Church until 1950 .

history

In 1788 the construction of the first church in the newly emerging town of Swinoujscie began. She became the successor to the village church in nearby Westswine , which until then was also responsible for Swinoujscie. Construction director David Gilly created the designs and the Prussian government provided financial support. The church was consecrated in 1792. In 1803 she got an organ. In 1814 the skipper Christian Heins gave a votive ship . In 1834 a new organ was built by August Wilhelm Grüneberg from Stettin.

In 1881 extensive alterations to the interior were started according to plans by Carl Schäfer and a tower was built. The new church was consecrated in 1891. In 1906 there were additions and modernizations inside. The church was named Christ Church because there was now a second Protestant church, the Luther Church, in the city. In 1927 she received a new organ from the well-known Steinmeyer company from Bavaria.

In 1945 the Christ Church was damaged in a bomb attack, but it was soon repaired. Protestant services were held there until 1950 before it was handed over to the Catholic Church. In 1973 a parish with the patronage of Christ the King was set up on her , which belongs to the Archdiocese of Stettin-Cammin . Repair work took place in the following years. From 1982 to 1986 the interior was almost completely redesigned; only the votive ship and organ remained from the original furnishings. In 2001 modernization work took place.

Architecture and interior design

The church is a baroque hall building with an attached neo-Gothic church tower.

Inside there is modern equipment. A votive ship from 1814 about three meters long hangs on the ceiling . The Steinmeyer organ from 1927 has 31 registers with two manuals and a pedal and is largely original.
