Christ Church (Sterkrade)
The Christ Church in the Sterkrade district of Oberhausen is the second place of worship for the Protestant parish there.
history
The Friedenskirche , consecrated in 1852, was no longer sufficient for the steadily growing Sterkrad community after about half a century. At the beginning of the 20th century, the Sterkrade colliery and the construction of the Dunkelschlag settlement led to the influx of new parishioners in the north of Sterkrade, so that the establishment of a second pastorate and the construction of another church was sought for this area. In May 1901, the first petition asked for the "employment of an assistant preacher" and the "temporary construction of a prayer hall". In August 1903 the Gutehoffnungshütte (GHH) guaranteed an annual subsidy of 800 marks for the salary of the assistant preacher, so that from 1904 an additional clergyman could be employed for the outskirts of the community. Another donation from the GHH of 20,000 marks opened the way for the construction of the second church in 1911. A plot of land between the Oberhausen – Arnhem railway line in the west and Weseler Strasse in the east could be acquired cheaply . The foundation stone was laid on June 22, 1913, and the inauguration ceremony on May 17, 1914, Rogate Sunday .
In World War II damaged several times, the Christ Church could temporarily not be used. It was officially put back into operation on the 3rd of Advent 1949. The side gallery was separated from the church service room in the course of the repair work and was initially used as a community hall , later as a room for confirmation classes and work with children and young people.
architecture
The church building, built according to plans by Johannes Menz from Barmen , combines Romanesque style elements with a simple design. The entrance front with stepped portal and window rose stands out from the rest of the building, which is kept in simple brick architecture.
Furnishing
The interior was not finished until 1928; the large image of a risen Christ adored by angels on the apse wall is no longer visible today, as the church has been renovated several times since then. Further renovations of the church led to the dismantling of the previous high pulpit in 1959 and the installation of a new organ with 20 stops in 1970. The round window on the west side was designed by the Oberhausen artist Heinrich Kasan. Iron parts in a stylized cross shape were welded into the rosette.
In addition to the church, the following buildings are currently located on the parish property: the rectory built in 1952 as well as the parish hall, kindergarten and sexton with ancillary rooms, which were gradually built in low-rise buildings in the 1960s.
Since the beginning of 2010, the Christ Church district has been the third parish of the newly formed parish of Holten-Sterkrade. As an “ open church ”, the Christ Church has also been accessible outside of worship times for several years. It is a stop on the northern route from Dinslaken-Hiesfeld to Dortmund in the “Pilgern im Pott” campaign as part of Ruhr 2010 .
After the renovation of the chancel, the Christ Church was reopened in a festive service for the 100th anniversary on May 17, 2014.
