The Protestant Christ Church is a listed church building in Emmerich am Rhein , a town in the Kleve district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ).

History and architecture

The unadorned, cross-shaped brick building was erected free-standing on the central Geistmarkt from 1690 to 1715 under the direction of the Amsterdam architect Arnold van der Leen. In addition to the 500-strong community, collection trips to the Netherlands and a lottery approved by the Prussian king contributed to the financing . On Palm Sunday , April 14th, 1715 the church was given its intended purpose. The square-shaped church under steep hipped roofs is crowned by an octagonal lantern . There are low extensions in the corners of the cross arms. This is a preaching church with Dutch characteristics; The immediate model was the older Oosterkerk in Amsterdam, according to whose plans it was built.

In a fire on July 19, 1907, the church burned to the ground. It was rebuilt by 1909. After destruction in World War II on October 7, 1944, the outbuilding was restored in its original form by 1958. Only since then has the church been called the Christ Church. The interior was changed by dividing it into two floors. The worship room is on the first floor and the parish hall is on the ground floor.

Furnishing

The organ of the Christ Church was built in 1962 by the organ builder Willi Peter . The instrument has 27 registers (almost 1500  pipes ) on three manuals and a pedal . In 1994 the Lithuanian artist Eimutis Markunas colored the church windows.
