Christ Church in Halle (Saale)

The Christ Church in Halle (Saale) is a listed church building from the 20th century in the Freiimfelde district and one of the few expressionist sacred buildings in Halle. The church is listed in the register of monuments of the city of Halle under registration number 094 10304.

history

From the second half of the 19th century, the district east of the main train station experienced a large influx of workers due to the settlement of several industrial companies. The residents of the area initially belonged to the Ulrich community in the old town. In 1926 the foundation stone was laid for a separate parish hall, which was consecrated a year later. As the parish “St. Ulrich Ost “the parish was parish in 1938.

The architect Georg Roediger initially planned a complex with a church, parish hall and rectory. Roediger, who presumably suspected that the church would never be built, had the two-story recessed parish hall built in a sacred shape on a cross-shaped floor plan.

During the Second World War the roof was destroyed by a bomb. However, almost the entire inventory has been preserved. Between 1983 and 1990, the parish hall was a well-known meeting place for the punk scene in Halle , where concerts and events took place.

In 2017 the Christ Congregation was united with the Johannes Congregation to form the new Johannes Congregation. It belongs to the Halle-Saalkreis parish of the Evangelical Church in Central Germany .

Building

The expressionist dark purple brick facade of the towerless parish hall is structured by tightly lined pilaster strips , giving the building a vertical orientation. As in a traditional church, the steep triangular gables mark a nave and a transept . Above the crossing one's roof skylights for the bell set. Since 1976 the narrow aisle-like corridors have been walled up for thermal reasons.

The roof turret and a dense row of wall templates that create the appearance of buttresses also indicate the sacred character of the building.

The barrel vault of the church and parish hall is made of wood. This large hall, located on the second floor, can be separated by folding doors and can therefore be used both together and separately.

Interior

Altar and organ are arranged one above the other on the southern front wall. The altar niche is framed by remarkable expressionist stone reliefs by the Halle sculptor Paul Horn , which show the Passion of Christ . Horn also created the organ's wooden framework, on which angels playing music can be seen in the Garden of Paradise.

The painter Helmut Ruhmer (1907–1945) created the first altar painting. Today's altar retable , which stands on the altar in front of the niche, was created in 1985 by the Halle painter Bernd Baumgart (born 1956). It symbolically refers to events in Halle in the 1980s. The pictures of the Stations of the Cross on the walls are also by Baumgart.

The organ (15 registers , two manuals and pedal , pneumatic action) was made in the Zörbiger workshop by Wilhelm Rühlmann .
