Christ Church in Mörtelstein

The Christ Church in Mörtelstein , a district of the municipality of Obrigheim in the Neckar-Odenwald district , goes back to a medieval chapel and has had its current name since 2004.

history

According to legend, the church to the northeast above the village goes back to the local saint Martin, who founded the village in the 12th or 13th century, built the chapel and is said to have been buried in the church tower. The oldest part of the church is the tower base, which is now used as a sacristy and still has late Gothic frescoes with scenes from the life of Christ. The church was given its present form in 1819 when the current nave was built and the tower was extended. During this renovation, the choir arch to the old tower choir was walled up, so that the choir area has been on the east wall of the nave since then. After various minor repairs, the last major renovation took place between 2002 and 2004. At the inauguration on Pentecost Sunday, May 30, 2004, the church was named Christ Church due to the dominant modern image of Christ on the east wall behind the choir .
