The Chropyňský rybník is a 24.09 hectare pond on the outskirts of the town of Chropyně in Okres Kroměříž , Czech Republic . It is fed by the Malá Bečva, a tributary of the March . The water area has been under nature protection since 1925 because of its large black-headed gull colony and extensive stocks of the critically endangered water nut .

Flora and fauna

Small groups of trees line the bank, mainly bastard poplars and black alders . The shrub layer is mainly formed by the privet . Cane, reed and sedge companies grow by the water ; narrow-leaved cattails and reeds dominate here . The population of the (annual) water nut usually spreads over several hectares and occupies 2/3 of the water surface. In the middle of the pond is a small island overgrown with elderberry bushes, on which the black-headed gull colony has settled. In the past up to 5,000 pairs were counted here. The pond and its surroundings are also used as breeding grounds for 20 other water bird species.

History and ecological importance

The pond is one of the last remains of a system of around 14-16 artificial water bodies that were created in the Middle Ages between Kroměříž and Chropyně in the floodplain of the March. Among other things, they protected a water festival that was mentioned in 1542 in place of today's castle . The pond itself has been known since the 16th century. It was called Starý rybník (Old Pond), later Zámecký rybník (Castle Pond) . Today it bears the name of the city whose buildings meanwhile enclose it on three sides. The traditional pond management here did not damage the aquatic vegetation. The pond was granted the status of a natural monument in 1925, and in 1954 it was declared a nature reserve. Only the intensification of fishing in the second half of the 20th century threatened the ecological balance. In 1984, as a result of the use of herbicides , the entire water surface was left without vegetation. The protection purpose of the reserve and the economic use are still in competition, a final solution is not yet available. In 1992 the pond was declared a National Natural Monument Chropyňský rybník.
