Chrysler Ireland was an assembly plant for motor vehicles and thus part of the automotive industry in Ireland .

Company history

The company was founded in Dublin in 1970 as the successor company of Rootes Motors Ireland . Chrysler from the USA had taken over the British Rootes group . The assembly of automobiles continued at the plant in Santry , a suburb of Dublin. The parts continued to come from Hillman , partly from Humber and Sunbeam . Malcolm Freshney initially ran the company. After Chrysler also took over Simca in 1972 , the Irish company imported and sold ready-assembled Simca vehicles. Michael Rowe took over management in 1974 and Tom Ronayne in 1977. A model for the British market was produced from 1977 to 1979. During this time, the number of employees rose to a maximum of 430. Ronayne left the company in 1980 and moved to the DeLorean Motor Company in Northern Ireland . Dermot Hurley became his successor.

In 1978, Groupe PSA took over Chrysler Europe . It was not until 1981 that the Irish plant became Talbot Ireland Motors .

vehicles

Hillman manufactured the Imp (until 1976), Avenger (also until 1976) and Hunter (until 1979) models . The Hunter was also manufactured for the British market from 1977 after production there was discontinued.

There is evidence that the Sunbeam Rapier and Humber Scepter were also assembled. Both models were discontinued in 1976.

The European brand Talbot was reintroduced in 1979 under Peugeot . It stands to reason that the factory assembled Talbot models until 1981. The registration statistics are from 1979 on Talbot.

Production numbers

The following are the registration numbers in Ireland for the years Chrysler Ireland assembled them. The figures for the first and last year also include production by the predecessor and successor company, as it is not possible to split them within one year. The 5000 Hillman Hunter for the UK market are not included in Irish registration statistics.
