Chuck Forsberg

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Charles Alton "Chuck" Forsberg (born May 6, 1944 in Wilmette , Illinois ; † September 24, 2015 in Portland , Oregon ) was an American computer scientist. He developed the two communication protocols YMODEM and ZMODEM . The protocols are used for the serial data transfer of files between two computer systems.

Life

Charles Alton Forsberg was the third child of Margery and Karl Lundberg. His older sisters were Annie and Susie. Chuck was only two or three when his father died.

YMODEM and ZMODEM

YMODEM and ZMODEM were developed in the 1990s at a time when transmission via the serial interface was widespread. The protocols use techniques such as blocking, checksums and resuming transfers to secure file transfers. The measures are particularly advantageous when transferring files over the telephone network with the aid of modems , since long delay times and transmission errors can often be expected there.

In 1984, Chuck Forsberg founded Omen Technology, Inc to sell ZMODEM and other software products.
