Chungar was a Minero settlement in the Andean highlands of Peru . The settlement was at 11 ° 7 ′  S , 76 ° 32 ′  W Coordinates: 11 ° 7 ′  S , 76 ° 32 ′  W in the Santa Cruz de Andamarca district in the Huaral province ( Lima region ) at an altitude of 4,380 m above sea level Sea level.

The settlement hit the headlines of the world press in 1971. On March 18, after a landslide in Lake Yanahuni , Chungar was flooded by a 30-meter-high tidal wave, which according to various estimates killed between 200 and 600 people. Since then, the Chungar mine has not been in operation, except for the period between 1995 and 2008 when some mining activity took place. Compañía Minera Chungar SAC , which operated until 1971 and has been controlled by Volcan Compañía Minera since 2000 , has continued mining activities in the Animón Mine , Huarón Mining District, 16 km northeast of Chungar.
