The Pacaraos district is located in the province of Huaral in Region Lima in Peru . The district was founded on January 2, 1857. It has an area of ​​216 km². The 2017 census counted 868 residents. In 1993 the population was 917, in 2007 it was 1219. The administrative center is the 3522  m high town of Santa Cruz de Andamarca with 272 inhabitants (as of 2017). Santa Cruz de Andamarca is 70 km east-northeast of the provincial capital Huaral . In the far east of the district is the abandoned Chungar mine . This was destroyed in 1971 by a tidal wave caused by a rock fall.

Geographical location

The Santa Cruz de Andamarca district is located in the Peruvian Western Cordillera in the north-east of the Huaral Province. The district is bounded in the northwest and west by the Río Chancay and in the south by its left tributary Río Baños. In the east the main ridge of the Western Cordillera runs with the continental divide .

The Santa Cruz de Andamarca district is bordered to the west and northwest on the district Pacaraos , in the northeast on the district Huayllay ( province Pasco ), to the east by the district of Santa Bárbara de Carhuacayán ( Yauli Province ) and in the south by the district Atavillos Alto .
